A 23-year-old father in Missouri has been detained after authorities reported he assaulted his 2-month-old son so brutally that the medical team treating the infant described his injuries as comparable to “being dropped from a 2 story window.”

Storm L. Sinclair was apprehended over the weekend and charged with one count of child abuse or neglect, according to court records. As stated in a probable cause affidavit, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 7:15 a.m. on Saturday to a residence in Fort Osage, assisting Emergency Medical Services with a 2-month-old infant suffering from a severe head injury.

When interviewed by paramedics on the scene, Sinclair allegedly claimed he was feeding the infant a bottle and preparing to burp him; however, while “transitioning” the child into a burping position, he said the newborn “kicked” and fell onto the “hard floor.” An officer highlighted that while speaking to the medic, Sinclair continuously repeated the phrase, “I’m sorry.”

The infant was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment. While there, the medical staff informed investigators that the baby had internal cranial bleeding and was “covered in bruises.” The staff further suggested that Sinclair’s account of the origin of his son’s injuries “did not match up” with the gravity of the child’s condition.

From the affidavit:

Deputies consulted with doctors at Children’s Mercy who reported that [the victim] had bruises all over his head, entire face, left ear cartilage, his jaw, and blood in his nostrils, in addition to bruises on his chest, abdomen, arms, and scrotal area. The doctors mentioned that [the victim] had “pattern bruising” on his back, minor bruises on his buttocks, and brain bleeding in various areas. The doctors also stated [the victim] had elevated liver enzymes. They indicated that [the victim]’s injuries were more severe than a fall from a bed, potentially resulting from shaking, multiple hard impacts, or being dropped from a 2 story window.

Ultimately, the medical staff concluded that the victim’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

When presented with the alleged evidence of child abuse, Sinclair reportedly responded by saying, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say,” as per the affidavit. He also expressed a desire for his son “to be a better man than he is,” admitting that he understood “he probably won’t be in his [son’s] life anymore.”

In a formal interview with detectives, Sinclair allegedly repeated that he dropped his son on the floor after the newborn “kicked.” However, this time his story allegedly included several additional grisly details.

“[Sinclair] advised he picked [the victim] up and thought he was choking so he struck him in the back with an open hand,” the affidavit states. “[Sinclair] advised at that point he laid [the victim] on the bed and struck him with a closed hammer fist in the abdomen one time. [Sinclair] advised he smacked [the victim] on the left side of the head.”

Sinclair also reportedly told police that he shook the child’s head “from side to side as hard as he could” and that he was “trying to harm” the victim, the affidavit said.

Sinclair was being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on bond of $25,000, but was released after posting 10% in cash, records show. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26 for a bond review hearing.
