A father in the greater Dallas area is accused of beating his child to death against the infant”s crib, authorities in Texas have announced.
Jordan Greer, 22, has been charged with capital murder in his baby’s death, the Mesquite Police Department announced.
On Sept. 18, shortly after 5 p.m., police arrived at a residence on the 5800 block of Northwest Drive in the city just east of Dallas. They had reportedly been informed that a “small child was unconscious and not breathing.”
Responding officers reported finding “an infant in medical distress,” and they “initiated life-saving measures” with assistance from the Mesquite Fire Department. The child was taken to a nearby hospital, where further treatment and observation occurred.
“Multiple injuries were discovered on the infant,” police stated. Those injuries included a skull fracture, brain swelling, brain bleeding, and multiple rib fractures in varying stages of healing, as detailed in a police affidavit obtained by Dallas-based TV station KDFW. The injuries were consistent with extreme physical abuse, prompting law enforcement to launch an investigation into the incident.
Initially, Greer expressed confusion about how his baby was injured, the local outlet reported. However, during a later police interview, he allegedly confessed to violently shaking and striking the child’s head against a crib on multiple occasions.
In addition to allegedly admitting he used excessive force on the child, Greer also expressed fear that he had killed him, KDFW noted.
A medical evaluation reportedly determined that the injuries were intentional and occurred over the course of at least two incidents of violence.
Five days after police initially arrived at the home, the child was pronounced dead. By Monday, investigators purportedly “developed sufficient evidence” to arrest and charge Greer with capital murder for his baby’s death, the police department announced. The investigation was still ongoing, police noted.
The child was only seven weeks old, according to CBS’ Texas affiliates KTVT and KTXA.
Jail records show Greer was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Sept. 22 on no bond.
