A tragic incident unfolded in New Jersey when a father, employed as a delivery driver, lost his life during an alleged car theft attempt by a teenager.

Jhon Aponte Alarcon, aged 46, succumbed to his injuries on April 4 after being hospitalized following a vehicular accident in Newark. As reported by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Alarcon was in the midst of a delivery around 12:45 p.m., leaving his vehicle running on the street while he dropped off a package. Seizing the opportunity, a teenage suspect reportedly entered the car and began to drive off.

In a desperate attempt to stop the theft, Alarcon rushed back to his vehicle, clinging to it as the suspect continued driving. The vehicle eventually collided with a parked car, overturning and fatally injuring Alarcon, who was a devoted father to three sons.

Prosecutors revealed that the suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended on Tuesday. The charges against the teenager include first-degree murder, carjacking, vehicular homicide, fleeing the scene of a fatal accident, endangering an injured person, and motor vehicle theft. The suspect’s identity remains undisclosed due to his minor status.

Speaking with NBC affiliate WNBC from New York, one of Alarcon’s sons, Debyd Aponte, shared the family’s grief and confusion, initially unaware of the full circumstances surrounding their father’s death. Aponte expressed the family’s heartache, saying, “It’s been really difficult. My dad was a hard-working man, he wasn’t doing anything bad. He was working, trying to provide for us, when this tragedy happened.”

Aponte told WNBC, “It’s been really difficult. My dad was a hard-working man, he wasn’t doing anything bad. He was working, trying to provide for us, when this [tragedy] happens.”

On a GoFundMe page started to raise money for funeral expenses, Alarcon’s son wrote, “This has completely shattered our world. One moment he was here, and the next he was gone. Nothing could have prepared us for this kind of pain.”

Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II encouraged anyone with more information about the case to call their tip line: 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
