In a shocking case from Florida, a couple found themselves in legal hot water last month after an extensive probe revealed they had orchestrated fraudulent fundraisers under the guise of their son battling cancer—despite him never receiving such a diagnosis.

The Dixie County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Edward Downing and Stephanie Skeris were accused of misusing the donations for personal expenditures, including shopping sprees, fuel costs, dining out, and cash withdrawals.

In December 2024, the couple did seek medical attention for their then-15-year-old son, citing issues like weight loss and other health concerns. However, after comprehensive testing, medical professionals found no evidence of cancer or tumors, advising instead on nutritional support and regular check-ups.

Nevertheless, authorities allege that the couple misled community members, local business owners, and others by claiming their son was suffering from cancer in multiple areas of his body, including his chest and internal organs.

They organized numerous fundraising events, some hosted by local businesses, soliciting donations under the false pretense that the money was needed for cancer treatments and related medical costs.

Investigators uncovered a bank account purportedly designated for the boy’s medical expenses. However, financial records revealed that the donations were diverted to a variety of personal purchases rather than for their intended purpose.

Online fundraisers were also located to solicit donations for the boy’s alleged cancer treatment and surgeries.

The sheriff’s office did not say how much money was raised and subsequently spent.

Investigators also uncovered concerns about the boy’s well-being and care, leading to him being taken into protective care, where his condtion is being evaluated and treated.

Downing and Skeris were booked on charges of scheme to defraud, communications, fraud, and child neglect. They were arrested on February 27. Both later posted $75,000 bonds and were released.

Court records show they are due in court again on April 7.
