A 72-year-old Florida man is behind bars after allegedly shooting at door-to-door salesmen as they left his property.
Two salesmen were in a Port Charlotte neighborhood on Monday, selling solar panel packages, as reported by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. After they knocked on one door, a woman answered and, upset by their presence, instructed them to leave.
The salesmen complied, but while departing, they heard gunshots and noticed a man, identified later as William Mark Williams, aiming a gun at them. He continued to fire multiple shots as they fled to a neighboring house and urgently knocked on the door.
The neighbor allowed them into her backyard while she contacted 911. Deputies arrived quickly, detaining Williams, who was pointed out as the shooter by the salesmen. The neighbor confirmed hearing the gunshots just before the men sought refuge at her door.
“Once again we are called out to a neighborhood in which a firearm was discharged recklessly,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell. “Thankfully, nobody was hurt by this individual’s actions, though I am sure the victims will not forget the fear they felt any time soon.”
The sheriff’s office said it secured a search warrant for Williams’ home and found multiple firearms and ammunition inside as well as one spent and one unspent casing outside. Williams refused to speak with detectives and demanded an attorney.
He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public and was ordered held without bond.
