Announcement from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A federal grand jury has indicted 27-year-old Trai Williams of Gainesville on charges of possessing controlled substances with the intent to distribute. This development was made public by John P. Heekin, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Williams made his initial appearance in federal court, standing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Midori A. Lowry in Gainesville. His jury trial is set to commence on May 27, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., under the jurisdiction of Chief District Court Judge Allen C. Winsor, also in Gainesville.

Upon conviction, Williams could face a prison sentence ranging from 10 years to life.

The investigation leading to this indictment was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, in collaboration with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the Gainesville Police Department. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Hapner.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely a formal accusation made by a grand jury, suggesting a defendant has violated federal criminal law. It does not equate to guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, with the onus on the government to establish the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt during trial.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
