Gainesville resident receives 18-month prison term for involvement in dogfighting

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Keith Gerard Miles, 42, has been given an 18-month state prison sentence after pleading nolo contendere to two counts associated with dogfighting.

The charges originate from a video dated March 18, 2024, showing an illegal dog fight at the 400 block of SE 12th Terrace. The footage displays two dogs, called Stormy and Midnight, battling as spectators shout their names. Initially, Miles is seen holding Midnight, releasing her, and subsequently urging her to “fight” and “bite.”

The animals were separated thrice to commence new rounds, and appeared to sustain injuries. Miles was identified following a jail phone call made by another attendant, who mentioned Miles as “Dogman,” a recognized nickname.

On August 15, Miles submitted a plea of nolo contendere regarding charges of animal fighting or baiting and facilitating a dog fight; the charge of owning a dog used for fighting was dismissed in the plea deal. As per the agreement, the charges carry a maximum of 10 years imprisonment; however, Judge James Colaw imposed two concurrent 18-month prison sentences.

Other defendants sentenced in the same case

Destiny Carmen Alexis Crowley received a nine-month jail term in February, with an additional probation term of two years for linked charges. Previously in October, Reginald Daunte Davis was sentenced to three years in prison plus two years of probation. Donovan Aubrey Grimes was handed a five-year prison sentence, concurrent with a sentence from a different case. In January, Terrence Antwoine Thomas was sentenced to three years in prison.
