Earlier this month, a woman from North Dakota was accused of attempted murder and aggravated assault after reportedly attacking her boyfriend with a hatchet.
As reported by KVLY, authorities responded to a Fargo residence around 5:30 a.m. on September 5. They found a victim who claimed to have been alone and attacked by surprise. While he was taken to a medical facility, officers interviewed another individual present, who identified Lena Deoliveira, the victim’s 23-year-old girlfriend, as the assailant.
This witness, who mentioned that all three individuals had been residing in the home’s separate garage, according to Law&Crime, said he was awakened by screaming and saw Deoliveira behind the victim wielding a hatchet. After striking him, she allegedly fled the scene.
The witness described seeing Deoliveira bring down the hatchet and, although he didn’t witness the impact, said it sounded “like splitting wood.” He noted that two of the victim’s fingers were either severed or barely attached, according to court documents.
The victim had surgery on his hand, and officers saw photos of his head with a large gash in it.
The suspect was arrested two days later in Moorhead, Minnesota, which is just across the Red River from Fargo.
Deoliveira appeared in court initially on September 12 following her extradition back to North Dakota. Her subsequent court appearance is scheduled for October 16. She remains in custody with a bond set at $500,000, as reported by InForum.
