Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In light of several recent incidents, the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) is stepping up patrols and increasing its presence along the City’s Rails to Trails pathways. The move aims to address reports of inappropriate actions occurring in the area.

A recent social media update highlighted various offenses, including an individual on a bicycle who has been allegedly groping trail-goers, as well as instances of indecent exposure and public masturbation. The message underlined that such behaviors are intolerable, emphasizing, “Our community’s safety is our utmost concern.”

The GPD strongly advises anyone who notices suspicious activities or experiences these incidents to contact 9-1-1 immediately. Quick reporting is crucial as it enables officers to swiftly respond and aids in identifying and capturing those involved.

Trail users are advised to adhere to the following safety measures:

  • Remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Be mindful of the people around you.
  • If using the trail at night, travel with a companion whenever possible.
  • Carry a light source and ensure you are visible.
  • Walk confidently and at a steady pace.
  • If you feel threatened or are in danger, attract attention and seek help immediately.
