In a surprising turn of events, Orijol Rukaj, who was temporarily released from prison to attend a funeral, managed to escape from the Keilor East Cemetery in Melbourne’s north-west. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM yesterday, during a service where Rukaj was supposed to mourn with his family.
Despite being under supervision, Rukaj managed to slip away from the cemetery without anyone noticing. Victoria Police have since launched a manhunt but have yet to track him down.
In hopes of enlisting public assistance, authorities have circulated a photograph of Rukaj, identified as a “medium security prisoner.” They are urging anyone who might recognize him to come forward.
Rukaj is a 47-year-old Caucasian male, standing 170 cm tall, characterized by a solid build and short, shaved black hair. At the time of his disappearance, he was dressed in a white shirt, black suit, and Asics sneakers.
The police remain vigilant and continue their efforts to locate Rukaj, encouraging the community to report any sightings or information that could lead to his capture.
The 47-year-old was last seen wearing a white shirt, black suit and Asics runners.
He is known to frequent the Sunbury and St Albans areas.
“Rukaj is not believed to be violent but members of the public are urged to call Triple-Zero immediately if they see him,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
“Anyone with other information that might assist in locating Rukaj is urged to contact Sunshine Police Station on 9313 3333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
