A Georgia officer is in critical condition after being shot, and law enforcement is searching for the suspected gunman.

WSB-TV reported that late Friday evening, Captain Brantley Worley was airlifted to a hospital in Chattanooga after being shot.

Officer Worley was dispatched to a suspicious person report on 1st Street. When the officers arrived, 26-year-old suspect Timothy Craig Ramsey allegedly began shooting.

A shot is said to have struck Worley in the face.

Police did try to apprehend Ramsey, where he is said to be living, but after a SWAT standoff at the home, it was discovered he was not there.

Worley, who has served on the force for three years, is in critical condition. He sustained a broken neck and a brain bleed, as reported by WSB-TV. He is married and has a young son.

“Captain Worley is a committed officer who has diligently served our community. We ask everyone to keep him, his family, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely challenging period,” stated McCaysville Chief of Police Michael Otis Earley on social media.

Ramsey is described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing around 185 pounds, with blue eyes and long hair at the time of the incident.

He was last observed fleeing on foot from the 1st Street area in McCaysville, wearing a green shirt, dark pants, and a dark motorcycle helmet.

If you see Ramsey, call 911 and do not approach him. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, in a statement posted on X, encouraged Georgians to pray for Worley.

“Marty, the girls, and I ask all Georgians to join us in praying for the officer who was shot while on duty, as well as for all law enforcement officers who regularly face such dangers while safeguarding their communities.”
