Drunk Michigan Driver Plows Into Family Leaving Festival, Killing 3-Year-Old & Injuring Twin Sister: Police

A woman from Michigan, who was driving on a suspended license, reportedly struck a mother and her two children on Sunday, leading to the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy while injuring his mother and twin sister.

Tammy Sandoval, age 55, was said to be behind the wheel without a valid license when she allegedly collided with a mother and her twin children, who were walking after attending the Livonia Spree festival in Livonia.

The collision claimed the life of young Khalil Robinson, who was just 3 years old. His mother, 28-year-old Tia Robinson, and his twin sister, Khole, sustained injuries but managed to survive, according to Click on Detroit.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. as Sandoval headed northbound on Merriman Road near Lyndon Street. After allegedly striking the family, she continued to her home in Mt. Morris, approximately 70 miles away, the prosecution said, FOX 2 Detroit reports.

Khalil and Khole’s grandmother, Regina Robinson, told FOX 2 the children wanted to “go and have fun at the carnival and the fireworks.”

Robinson questioned why anyone would “keep going without stopping, trying to see if they’re okay, and can they help? Can they save them instead of driving off acting like they didn’t hit anybody?”

Police arrested Sandoval on Monday.

On Thursday, Sandoval was arraigned in the 16th District Court and faces charges including one count of operating while license suspended, revoked, or denied—causing death; two counts of operating while license suspended, revoked, or denied—causing serious injury; one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident while at fault—causing death; and two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, causing serious impairment.

Judge James Jolly gave Sandoval a $600,000 cash/surety bond with no 10% option. If she posts bond, she will be required to wear an ankle monitor and undergo preliminary breath testing three times per day, ClickOnDetroit reports.

Sandoval reportedly has a criminal driving history, which had her license suspended through August 30, 2025, after she refused a roadside breath test.

She also has a conviction from October 2024 in Mt. Pleasant for impaired driving and was involved in a crash in November in Mt. Morris, injuring two people.

Khalil’s twin sister, Khole, was released from the hospital, while the mother, Tia Robinson, remains in a medically induced coma with severe head trauma.
