A 25-year-old Iowa mother was sentenced last week to 50 years in prison after she was convicted in the death of her 3-year-old son two years ago.
Billie Mosier was also ordered to pay court costs and $150,000 in victim damages, KTIV reported.
In November 2023, Mosier was taken into custody, six months following the passing of her son, Jordan Reed. On May 4, 2023, Mosier dialed 911 to report finding Jordan unresponsive in the backseat of her car after a journey from Ida Grove to Battle Creek. He was initially brought to a hospital in Ida Grove but was later moved to a children’s hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, where he succumbed the day after.
Initially, Mosier claimed that the child was strangled by the shoulder strap of his car seat, as reported by KCAU. However, the investigation revealed that he was not secured in the car seat and, in reality, Mosier often neglected to strap him in during trips. Witnesses indicated, according to KTIV, that the child was seen hanging out of the rear driver’s side window, which seemingly resulted in the injuries that led to his death.
Officials stated that during the relatively brief drive, the car’s window went up, trapping the child. It is alleged that Mosier was distracted by her cell phone, preventing the child from seeking help.
Mosier waived her right to a jury trial, and a judge found her guilty in April.
