Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Albert Charbine, a 33-year-old resident of Jacksonville, was taken into custody yesterday, facing charges of sexual assault against a woman he met on a first date.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy, the incident occurred on March 3 after the victim and Charbine arranged to meet at a restaurant in Tioga through the dating app Tinder. The woman had reportedly shared text messages with authorities, which showed she had informed Charbine before their date that she was not ready for a sexual relationship.

During their time at the restaurant, the woman began to feel unusual symptoms, including tingling in her arms, weakness, and a loss of body control. Initially, she thought these symptoms were due to a “cluster migraine.” When she expressed her desire to return home, Charbine offered to drive her, but she opted to drive herself. However, she agreed to let him follow her home to ensure her safety, as he insisted.

Upon reaching her residence, the victim reported feeling disoriented and having difficulty maintaining balance. Despite this, Charbine allegedly followed her inside. Once inside, he is said to have initiated unwanted physical contact, kissing her, despite her protests that she felt ill and did not wish to engage in any sexual activities.

According to the victim, Charbine ignored her requests to stay in the living room when she went to change clothes, instead following her into her bedroom. He reportedly sat on her bed, and when she moved to the living room, he joined her uninvited, escalating his advances until he allegedly raped her, disregarding her repeated refusals. The victim stated she did not resist physically out of fear that Charbine might harm her further.

The deputy reported that after Charbine left the victim’s residence, the victim sent him a text message saying she felt violated, and Charbine responded, “Did you have any fun at least?”

Charbine was arrested at UF Health Shands on March 9. Post Miranda, he did not want to answer any questions.

Charbine has been charged with sexual battery. He has no criminal history in Alachua or Duval counties, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
