A Georgia man’s fate is sealed with a life sentence following the tragic murder of his wife, a day shy of her birthday and on the brink of launching her newly renovated barbershop. The grim event unfolded in Douglasville, located about 20 miles west of Atlanta, casting a shadow over what should have been a momentous occasion for the couple.

Volanta Lejuan Walker, aged 51, confessed to the malice murder of his wife, 56-year-old Sabrina Walker, during an incident last October. His guilty plea extended to two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, solidifying his life sentence plus an additional 25 years as decreed by Judge Deah Warren, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

The case underscores the perilous nature of domestic violence, a point strongly conveyed by District Attorney Dalia Racine who noted, “Too often as a society we are dismissive of the impact of domestic violence on those victimized by it and their loved ones. We will look the other way and minimize the threat based on if a victim decides to leave or stay with their abuser.” Racine emphasized the danger these situations pose to law enforcement and lamented the loss of a “precious life” when Sabrina decided to leave her abuser. Her hope is that this swift legal resolution aids Sabrina’s family in their healing journey, ensuring her enduring impact on her family and community is never forgotten.

According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the tragic events of October 4 unfolded following a domestic argument at the couple’s home. Sabrina Walker attempted to flee outside, but her husband pursued and fatally shot her.

When Douglasville police arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., they found Sabrina Walker lying on the ground. Despite orders to disarm, Volanta Walker allegedly aimed his weapon at the responding officers, prompting an officer to shoot him. He was then taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. Sadly, Sabrina Walker was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a sorrowful end to her story.

He remained armed after Douglasville police officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to the home on Littlebrook Way and saw Sabrina Walker lying on the ground, cops said. Police ordered him to drop the gun, but he allegedly pointed it at them. An officer shot him, per the press release. Paramedics rushed Volanta Walker to the hospital for treatment. They pronounced Sabrina Walker dead at the scene.

Sabrina Walker was slated to celebrate her 57th birthday on Oct. 5 as well as open her updated barbershop, Groomsmen Atlanta, her family told local Fox affiliate WAGA. Despite the tragedy, her family held the grand opening in her honor. She owned the barbershop since 2009 but recently remodeled and expanded the business.

“It feels like somebody is missing,” her daughter Anesha Nixon told the TV station. “It really feels like her presence needs to be here — her [being] bubbly, her running around talking to people. It doesn’t feel right. It feels like she needs to be here.”

Another daughter, Michaella Barnswell, said opening the barbershop is what her mother would have wanted.

“My mama put her blood, sweat and tears into this business, and we’re going to outlive her legacy,” she said.
