A Kentucky resident has been detained on charges of child abuse following an incident that left his girlfriend’s young child severely injured during a diaper change last month.
According to court documents, the event occurred on October 14 when 29-year-old Jorge Jesus Perez-Ramirez was caring for the child. The injured child was first taken to an urgent care facility before being transferred to Norton Children’s Hospital, where their condition was deemed critical, as reported by WLKY.
Medical professionals diagnosed the injuries as consistent with pediatric abusive head trauma, which is often the result of forceful shaking or a strong blow to the head.
Court records reveal that Perez-Ramirez exhibited a severe disregard for human life by handling the child roughly enough to inflict injuries associated with pediatric abusive head trauma during a diaper change.
He was taken into custody on Wednesday, as detailed by WHAS.
Facing charges of assault and criminal abuse of a child aged 12 or under, Perez-Ramirez is currently held on a $100,000 bond.
Police did not release the age of the child or provide any further information about their current condition.
