Justice Without a Trial: The Kohberger Plea Deal

Marking three years since the tragic Moscow Murders, a significant development unfolded in the courtroom. Judge Hippler has mandated that Bryan Kohberger pay an additional $3,000 in restitution to the families of Kaylee and Maddie. This sum is intended to cover the expenses of the urns that now hold the remains of the inseparable friends.

Kohberger, currently serving a life sentence, protested the additional financial obligation, claiming his inability to pay due to his incarceration. However, Judge Hippler dismissed this argument, highlighting that Kohberger accrued nearly $30,000 while in county jails, largely thanks to contributions from his family.

The judge further emphasized that Kohberger, being a young man, has the potential to earn money through prison work programs. Hippler expressed confidence that Kohberger would eventually generate enough funds throughout his life to meet his restitution responsibilities, or at least come close.

This recent restitution order adds to the hefty $300,000 Kohberger is already required to pay the victims’ families. Yet, the courtroom was taken aback by another announcement from Hippler. He noted that Idaho law permits Kohberger to profit from selling his story, potentially earning money through media deals. Importantly, any proceeds from such ventures would not be available for restitution to the victims’ families.

In light of these developments, today’s discussion features insights from Nancy Grace and her expert panel.
