A 25-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend’s father, reportedly observing as the victim lay on the ground with “blood pouring from his neck” after a dispute on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation in New Mexico, according to authorities.

Armondo Paul faces charges of second-degree murder related to the June 27 incident outside his ex-girlfriend’s residence in Shiprock, as detailed in a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico. The Navajo Nation Police Department arrived at the home shortly after 3 a.m., where officers discovered a man with a neck stab wound in the driveway. He was declared deceased by first responders.

Cops spoke with the victim’s daughter, who identified her father’s killer as Paul, who is also her ex-boyfriend, a probable cause arrest affidavit said. She told FBI agents that Paul had come over to her home where she lived with her father a few hours before the stabbing. She did not want to speak with Paul but also didn’t want him “causing problems” so she relented and came outside. The woman said Paul had “always been abusive” and she broke things off with him. But he would not take no for an answer, she told cops.

She said after speaking with Paul briefly she gave him a ride back to his mother’s house and told him to go to sleep. Paul later told agents he tried to go to sleep but could not, due to his “internal feelings.

“Paul’s feelings ranged from wanting to destroy something to wanting to kill himself,” cops wrote.

He grabbed a kitchen knife and walked back to his ex-girlfriend’s home with the intention of harming himself, the affidavit stated. Paul decided to shut off the power to “elicit a response,” per the feds. His ex-girlfriend — who Paul described as a “b—,” police say — and her father came outside.

The girl and her father went back inside and shut the door, which sent Paul into a “rage,” according to the affidavit. He allegedly kicked in the door and grabbed his ex’s arm while her father tried to pull Paul away. The defendant allegedly pulled out the knife, and stabbed the victim in the neck. The victim pulled out the knife from his neck and stumbled into the driveway where he collapsed, according to the FBI.

Paul went outside where he saw the victim “laying in the driveway with blood spewing out of his neck,” the affidavit said. The victim also was making “gurgling sounds.” Paul ran back into the home and kicked down the door to his girlfriend’s bedroom. She was in the room holding a baby. He saw the baby was “startled” so he ran back outside. He ran away when he heard the ambulance coming, according to the affidavit.

Agents arrested Paul a short time later and he remains in federal custody. He was assigned a public defender. His next court date has not yet been scheduled.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.
