The incident began on Luxford Road, where police initiated a pursuit of a vehicle reportedly captured on video traveling at excessive speeds. The chase led officers to a block of flats on Halinda Street in Whalan.
Authorities claim that Shaun Baxter, a 38-year-old suspect, exited the car and entered one of the apartments, leaving a passenger behind in the vehicle.
The passenger was taken into custody but was soon released after a brief conversation with the officers, according to police statements.
In response, law enforcement established a perimeter around the apartment complex, prepared to intercept the suspect as soon as he emerged.
Residents were advised to remain indoors to ensure their safety during the operation.
Witness Declan Boulson described the scene, stating, “A swarm of cops followed after, with the canine unit and more police arriving, picking up his scent and racing down the driveway.”
When Baxter emerged at 5am, he was arrested and charged with multiple offences.
That includes not stopping leading to a police pursuit, driving recklessly, dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, and breaching a domestic violence apprehended violence order.
He appeared in court today, where he was refused bail.
