A man from North Carolina faces accusations of being ejected from a bar and coming back half an hour later with a “large machete” and brass knuckles, which he allegedly used in an attempt to kill another patron responsible for his removal, according to police reports.

Matthew King, 39, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with intent to kill or cause serious injury related to the incident that occurred on Aug. 9, as reflected in online records.

The affidavit for King’s arrest describes an “verbal altercation” with another patron inside The Public House at 300 S Brevard St. in Uptown Charlotte around 2 a.m., leading to his removal from the premises by staff after the argument “turned physical,” according to police.

Approximately 30 minutes later, King returned, wielding brass knuckles and a machete around 18 inches long, the affidavit states. King allegedly approached the victim from behind and questioned, “remember me?” Before attempting to hit the victim in the head with the brass knuckles and swinging the machete from above towards the victim’s head, as detailed in the document.

The victim reportedly informed authorities that he sustained a “large laceration” from King’s machete while defending himself with one hand. Along with multiple witnesses, they allegedly overpowered King and “disarmed” him by subduing him physically, police reported.

The victim was transported to a local hospital due to his injuries, which required surgery. Another man who was with him and trying to stop the violence suffered a minor laceration to his right thigh while disarming King, police say.

When the cops arrived, King was allegedly found “covered in blood” outside The Public House, along with his victim. He allegedly had the machete and brass knuckles still on him, according to the affidavit.

“Multiple witnesses remained on scene and provided written statements to officers which corroborated the victims’ stories,” the affidavit says.

King was treated for injuries sustained during the incident before being arrested and booked at the Mecklenburg County Jail. His next court date is pending.
