A 31-year-old man in Texas has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s ex-husband, fatally stabbing the 44-year-old victim outside of a birthday party over the weekend.
Jamarcus Dewayne Doggett was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Wesley A. Agent, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Lufkin Police Department, the fatal stabbing occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday. At about 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call about a disturbance in the area of the 900 block of Glenn Street. Upon arrival, police discovered that an adult male victim, later identified as Agent, had been taken to a local hospital by a personal vehicle with apparent stab wounds.
The suspected assailant, identified as Doggett, had left the scene.
Officers responded to the hospital, where Agent succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m., police said.
Police found Doggett at a nearby home, where he was questioned about the incident. Initially, no arrests were made because detectives and officers were still investigating. However, by Monday, police announced they had collected sufficient evidence to arrest Doggett for Agent’s murder.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Lufkin ABC affiliate KTRE, both men attended a birthday party that evening and engaged in a street fight. A family member of Agent reportedly informed police that they confiscated a knife from Doggett after the fight.
Shortly after the confrontation, an officer responding to a separate 911 hang-up call encountered Doggett and his brother in the street. The officer noticed blood on Doggett’s clothing and a cut on his hand, which led to their detainment at the scene. Due to excessive blood loss, Doggett was taken to a local hospital.
When interrogated by police, Doggett stated he was familiar with Agent since he was dating Agent’s ex-wife, as reported by Nacogdoches CBS affiliate KYTX reported. He also alleged that Agent had “been following him around town throughout the day” and attempted to fight him on two different occasions that day, according to what police wrote in a probable cause affidavit.
While at the party that evening, Doggett said that Agent pulled up and parked in the middle of the street, got out, and punched Doggett in the face.
“Jamarcus advised he then hit Agent back then grabbed a knife from his waist and swung it at Agent 2 or 3 times hitting him with it,” the affidavit reportedly states. “Jamarcus advised Agent went to the ground and Jamarcus stated he began punching him in the shoulder area and then pulled his shirt over his head before grabbing him and dragging him down the street. Jamarcus advised that was the last thing he remembers before blacking out.”
Doggett was processed at the Angelina County Jail where he is currently being held on $300,000 bond. It was not immediately clear when he was scheduled to appear in court.
