Brynnen Murphy being escorted by police in March 2022 (Baton Rouge Police Dept.).
A young man from Louisiana, aged 23, is set to spend the remainder of his life in prison after fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend and then driving away with her 2-year-old son, whom he subsequently tossed off a bridge while still alive, resulting in the child’s death.
On Wednesday, Brynnen Murphy officially admitted guilt on two counts of manslaughter and one count of first-degree feticide, as announced by the authorities. Murphy was initially apprehended in 2022, facing charges of first-degree murder in the ruthless killings of 24-year-old Kaylen Johnson and her son, Kaden Johnson. A grand jury later indicted him on second-degree murder charges, with a trial looming the next week. However, Murphy struck an agreement with the prosecutors from the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office.
As per his plea agreement, Murphy is required to serve a 95-year sentence in a state correctional facility, which effectively constitutes a life sentence, reported Baton Rouge CBS affiliate WAFB.
Kaden was not Murphy’s biological son, though Kaylen Johnson was pregnant with Murphy’s child at the time of her death.
Prosecutors reportedly said they were motivated to make a deal with Murphy to spare the victims’ family additional pain at trial, particularly given the graphic nature of the case.
