The case involving a woman who was shot by her ex-boyfriend and subsequently paralyzed from the waist down has reached a conclusion, with the assailant sentenced to many years in prison.

Deandre Ward, 24, admitted to aggravated battery charges on April 17. On Wednesday, he received a 20-year sentence to the Illinois Department of Corrections, as announced by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office.

This charge originated from a July 2024 incident, where Ward’s 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, carrying a knife, was involved in an altercation with another woman on East Virginia Avenue in Peoria, as reported by authorities. After the confrontation, as the woman tried to flee, Ward shot her in the back, resulting in her paralysis from the waist down.

The couple had just recently broken up, according to Peoria-based NBC, ABC, MyNetworkTV, and The CW Plus affiliate WEEK.

During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, the unnamed victim described how the shooting has affected her life, saying she “can no longer perform daily basic tasks, such as bathing or using the restroom, without assistance,” according to the state’s attorney’s office.

“She relies on care from a friend, is in pain constantly, requires daily medication, and has been hospitalized multiple times over the past year,” prosecutors added.

“I’ll never be the same,” WEEK quoted the victim saying at the emotional hearing.

“I’m sorry for the pain the last 11 months,” Ward is said to have admitted in court.
