A 20-year-old man from Texas is set to serve twenty years in prison for the murder of his own mother, whom he stabbed multiple times before attempting to harm his father. The father managed to restrain his son and call 911. Last week, Cameron County District Judge Juan A. Magallanes sentenced Dallas Scott Gilbert to a two-decade term in a state prison for the killing of Angela Watt Gilbert in 2023, as per court records.
Gilbert, aged 18 when the incident occurred, entered into an agreement with prosecutors by pleading guilty to one count of murder. In return for his guilty plea, the State decided to drop charges of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to Law&Crime’s earlier reports, the assault on his parents transpired around 11:30 a.m. on April 19, 2023, at the family residence on Stuart Place Road’s 2100 block. This location is situated roughly 250 miles south of San Antonio, Texas, and about a 30-minute drive from the U.S.-Mexico border.
Court documents reveal that prosecutors described Gilbert’s “sudden rage” as ignited by recalling his father’s earlier comments that day about him not being “in shape” enough to “throw a football.”
Gilbert later recounted to authorities how he went to the kitchen, took a knife, and cut his mother’s hand, claiming it was during “just playing around,” as reported by Brownsville, Texas, NBC and CBS affiliate KVEO reported. He then described being overtaken by an “unexplainable rage,” proceeding to stab his mother multiple times.
Gilbert’s father was awakened by his wife’s screams for help and went to investigate, which is when Gilbert reportedly said he was overcome with anger and began stabbing his father as well.
Emergency medical personnel were transporting Gilbert’s mother to a local hospital for treatment when she was pronounced dead.
Following the attack, Primera Chief of Police Manuel Trevino said that Gilbert’s mother suffered a total of six to eight stab wounds, but emphasized that she did not go down easily.
“I can say one thing, the female did fight. She did have several defensive wounds on her hands, which means she didn’t go down without a fight,” the police chief said of Angela Gilbert. “But again, this was her son attacking her. She probably had no idea what was coming.”
Following the attack, authorities said Gilbert “gave a confession to the entire incident, attributing the attack to a moment of rage that went totally out of control.”
