This week, a Florida man faced sentencing after it was uncovered that he was simultaneously wed to three different women, all unaware of each other’s existence until the matter was legally investigated.
Henry Betsey Jr., aged 50, entered a plea of “nolo contendere” to a felony bigamy charge in May, which means he did not contest the charge but accepted the punishment.
On Thursday, he was sentenced to two years probation, according to Hernando County court records. He will be registered as a convicted felon.
Reports from WFTS, the Tampa Bay ABC affiliate, indicate that Michele Narens and Henry Betsey were wed in Hernando County on November 23, 2022. Michele shared that they connected through Match.com and quickly bonded, leading to their marriage just three weeks later.
Everything changed when she realized he was still married to another woman.
Brandy Allen, according to marriage license records reviewed by Law&Crime, married Henry Betsey on February 22, 2022, in Manatee County, Florida. They reportedly met through the dating app Stir, tailored for single parents.
“He was very convincing,” said the woman who legally became Brandy Betsey. “We married at the courthouse without any issues. The system didn’t alert us to his two other ongoing marriage licenses.”
Allen told WFTS the whole process took 15 minutes. But, even then, before Michele Betsey was in the picture, there was another woman to whom Henry Betsey had given his last name. And it is said to have been Tonya Betsey who realized last year what her husband had done.
Tonya Betsey and Henry Betsey reportedly tied the knot in Duval County, Florida, in the November of 2020 after meeting on Tinder. “The way he portrayed himself, he sold the perfect person,” she told the local outlet, “when in reality he was none of those things.”
Michele Betsey said Tonya Betsey found her and messaged her.
“And I had no idea that she was still married to him,” the newest wife said.
Henry Betsey was arrested in Seminole County, Florida, when, on Oct. 23, 2024, he arrived at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office’s headquarters and “advised that he was currently wanted and wished to turn himself in,” court documents in the county state.
The women reportedly believed he married them for money, not love.
“The day we got married, he said, ‘We need to make your bank account a joint bank account,'” Brandy Betsey told WFTS.
According to the local TV station, Henry ended up filing for divorce from Tonya after his arrest and is working to annul his other two marriages. While he apologized in court to the women and everyone involved during Thursday’s hearing, Michele Betsey didn’t believe it was genuine.
“The fact that he is now a convicted felon, that speaks mountains. And I feel like that is vindication on our parts,” she said. “Do I think that he has any remorse? Absolutely not.”
