In a courtroom decision delivered on Wednesday, a Michigan woman faced sentencing in connection with the tragic death of her young daughter in 2024.
Reports from ABC 13 revealed that a judge in Grand Rapids handed Angelica Arechiga, age 27, a sentence of 45 days in jail and 24 months of probation. This followed her no contest plea earlier this year to a charge of child abuse leading to death.
As highlighted by CrimeOnline, the incident unfolded on October 9, 2024, in Grand Rapids. Arechiga had left her 1-year-old daughter, Julieta Magdelena, inside a parked car while she went shopping at La Tienda on South Division Avenue.
The probable cause affidavit disclosed, “Angelica left Juliet, an 18-month-old child, alone in a vehicle for approximately 15 minutes, unrestrained and without any adult supervision, which posed a significant risk of harm or injury to Juliet, resulting in her death.”

The toddler’s death certificate cited asphyxia due to wedging as the cause of death, with the manner of death classified as accidental.
Arechiga had left her three children, along with another child she was babysitting, in the car during her 15-minute absence. Upon returning, she opened the car door, and the toddler fell out, unresponsive and not breathing.
None of the children were secured in car seats, the report said.
“Even if you’re not intentionally going to harm your children, you must take special care to make sure that they not be harmed unless it is out of your control,” the judge said.
Arechiga will get one day of jail credit.
