In a tragic incident in Minnesota, a mother is accused of causing the death of her 18-month-old daughter by allegedly administering an excessive dose of sleep medication in the child’s bottle following a custody loss.

Authorities were called to a residence in Champlin, near Minneapolis, on Friday, specifically at the 11900 block of Castle Rock Court. Upon arrival, police encountered an unresponsive child and an adult woman in medical distress, suspected to have attempted suicide. Both were transported to the hospital, where the child was declared deceased.

Maige Elizabeth Yang, aged 23, now faces a charge of second-degree murder for the death of her daughter, De’Ali Blia Delgado. Yang, who has been discharged from the hospital, is presently held in the Hennepin County Jail with a bond set at $1.5 million.

Yang’s parents informed investigators that earlier on Friday, a judge had awarded temporary custody of the child to her father following a court hearing. After returning home, Yang reportedly took De’Ali to an upstairs bedroom. Her father later attempted to enter the room but discovered it was locked, according to the parents’ account.

He reportedly forced the door open and found De’Ali on the floor, her lips turning blue. He immediately carried her downstairs and contacted emergency services.

Following a Miranda warning, Yang allegedly confessed to investigators that she had added a “significant amount” of sleep medication to her daughter’s bottle to “make the pain go away.” She purportedly hoped that De’Ali would “pass peacefully in her sleep,” as recorded by the police.

De’Ali’s father, Erick Delgado, started a GoFundMe to raise money for a funeral for his “beautiful princess.” He wrote:

It’s with my heart shattered that I write this post. My baby girl De’Ali Blia Delgado was not just taken away from me, She was murdered. I did everything right. Today I was suppose to wake up right next to my daughter.

I had finally won custody of my beautiful baby on Friday , January 9th at 11:30Am and by 4Pm her life was gone. I fought my hardest for you, and the justice system failed you.

Yang is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 10.
