GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A Gainesville woman, Voynara Ashely Barcelo, 32, finds herself in police custody following an incident in which her 2-year-old child allegedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol while unsupervised. The child required hospital care after the alarming incident.
Authorities report that on March 1, at approximately 3 p.m., Barcelo left her child alone at home for roughly an hour to visit the child’s father. During her absence, the youngster reportedly accessed Barcelo’s alcohol, leading to the child’s intoxication.
Emergency services were summoned when the toddler was found unresponsive and unsteady on their feet. Paramedics noted the smell of alcohol on the child’s breath before transporting them to the hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses claim that Barcelo appeared “extremely intoxicated” upon her return to her home. This observation has added to the concerns surrounding her ability to care for her child.
After being read her rights, Barcelo allegedly admitted to visiting the child’s father during the time of the incident. She expressed unawareness of the child’s access to alcohol, explaining that she keeps alcohol at home and that the toddler is capable of opening the refrigerator. However, she remained uncertain about when the child consumed the alcohol.
Barcelo has been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm. She has one traffic misdemeanor conviction, and she has been released from the jail.
