The mother of a three-week-old baby boy who died after he was violently shaken by his own father has told her ex she will never forgive him.

Rebecca Denton confronted Ashley McGregor in South Australia‘s District Court today over the death of their tiny newborn Alvin four years ago at Christie Downs in Adelaide’s southern suburbs.

“I will be forever left wondering what my baby boy would be like, what his voice would have sounded like,” Denton said.

“I will never get to hear Alvin say he loves me, I won’t even know what his hugs would feel like.

“All I have left of him are his pictures and his ashes.”

McGregor was found guilty by a judge of manslaughter and neglect.

He has always claimed he tripped inside their home, but Alvin’s horrific injuries were more consistent with being violently shaken.

For 42 hours as Alvin deteriorated in 2021, McGregor did nothing.

The father even encouraged Denton to blow cannabis smoke in the three-week-old’s face in acts Judge Paul Muscat called “reprehensible”.

“Pretending the baby would get better just doesn’t cut it,” Muscat said.

Denton has also previously been convicted of neglect for her failure to get medical help for Alvin.

She is serving a sentence on home detention.

McGregor, who still doesn’t admit shaking baby Alvin or being neglectful of the 21-day-old, has lodged appeals against the guilty verdicts.

The 35-year-old is currently in jail for other separate offending.

He will be sentenced in a fortnight.
