Donna Adelson Murder Trial: Slain Florida Law Professor’s Ex Shielded from Testifying

Adelson was arrested at Miami International Airport in an alleged attempt to flee to a non-extradition country.

Authorities suspect that Adelson orchestrated the murder of Markel after her daughter Wendi’s divorce, particularly following a decision by Dan and a judge to reject her request to move herself and her two children to South Florida to be closer to her family.

Donna Adelson becomes the fifth individual charged in the conspiracy to murder her former son-in-law, who was a Florida State University law professor renowned in Tallahassee. Luis Rivera was the first to be convicted after agreeing to a plea deal.

Rivera testified that he, along with his childhood friend Sigfredo Garcia, traveled from Miami to Tallahassee to execute the plan, with Garcia being the shooter. Rivera, a former leader of the Latin Kings gang, received a 19-year prison sentence in return for testifying against his close friend.

This week, in Donna Adelson’s trial, some of the most compelling evidence revolves around money transactions and wiretap recordings. Mary Hull from the Florida Department of Financial Services provides a breakdown of financial activities surrounding the time of Dan Markel’s murder.

On the stand, Rivera admits that he received over $33,000 for the assassination. The jury also hears federal wiretap recordings, with Charlie and Donna Adelson speaking in coded language. Additionally, a staged interaction, known as the bump, was used to provoke a flurry of phone calls among the conspirators.
