Secret documents, including never-before-seen photos of Kohberger’s victims, may be made public in the near future.
Unsealing the records involves an extended procedure where Kohberger’s legal team and the prosecutors are given two weeks to discuss whether the materials should be made public or remain confidential.
The initial set comprises 43 items, which include photographs of each deceased victim and a collective image of the six victims. It is unclear if these images were captured prior to or following the attacks.
The document release isn’t arbitrary; the judge is examining the items for potential unsealing by starting with the most recent and proceeding backwards. Many documents in the first group are motions concerning the evidence admissible to jurors during the trial, such as which witnesses may testify and whether Kohberger can argue his alternate suspect theory.
Further records address whether certain items ought to stay private or involve rulings on what will be sealed. The anticipated duration for the process spans months since each batch requires thorough review prior to any release.
A remaining enigma is why Kaylee’s dog did not alert anyone. Reports indicate that Murphy exhibited unusual behavior in the months before Kaylee’s murder. Both surviving roommate Bethany Funke and Kaylee’s former boyfriend recounted incidents to police where Kaylee noticed a shadowy figure near her home during walks with Murphy.
Murphy began to flee home, hiding in the bushes behind the house and ignoring calls to return. Some suggest Kohberger may have been secretly befriending Murphy to prevent any barking when he entered the home.
