Authorities in California have launched an investigation following the discovery of a newborn at a college apartment complex on Monday.
According to KABC, the infant, a full-term girl, was discovered at the Cardinal Gardens Apartments, which is situated close to the University of Southern California campus. This discovery came on the heels of an emergency call for a 20-year-old woman experiencing breathing difficulties at the same location.
Firefighters were initially called to assist the woman, but were soon instructed by Los Angeles police to return when the lifeless newborn was found. It remains uncertain if the woman’s medical emergency is connected to the infant’s death.
The Los Angeles medical examiner’s office has recorded the infant’s age at 19 hours, though the cause and manner of her death are still under investigation.
“They went straight to the bedroom, so I’m assuming they already knew something that happened,” a USC student remarked to KABC.
The case is actively being investigated by authorities.
