Police in New South Wales’ north-west have released a second appeal for information as they continue to investigate the discovery of a body in a burnt out car last month.

Emergency personnel made a grim discovery within the burnt wreckage of a 1996-model Nissan Pathfinder station wagon on the Kamilaroi Highway in Brewarrina. This location lies approximately 100 kilometers east of Bourke and 787 kilometers northwest of Sydney.

A crime scene was promptly established, prompting an investigation that extended to Barwon Four Reserve Brewarrina. During these searches, authorities seized several items that are now subject to forensic examination, according to police reports.

Detective Inspector Andrew Barnes, the Crime Manager for Central North PD, confirmed that the deceased has been identified and that the victim’s family has been informed. However, he emphasized that the circumstances warrant further probing.

“Given the situation in which the body was found, we are treating this death as suspicious,” stated Detective Inspector Barnes. “While we have notified the next-of-kin, we urge anyone with potentially relevant information to come forward and assist in our investigation.”

However, he said there was still reason for investigations to be continued.

“Due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body we are treating the death as suspicious,” he said.

“We have identified the deceased person and notified their next-of-kin, but we are appealing to the public to come forward if they have information which could be relevant to this investigation.”

Police previously appealed for any witnesses or any drivers with dashcam footage who may have driven in the area near the time of the discovery to come forward to police.

There is no ongoing risk to the public, police said, and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information they believe can assist police is urged to contact Bourke Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
