On a typically bustling afternoon in Coburg, chaos erupted when a silver Toyota Camry was spotted driving erratically. Witnesses reported that the vehicle collided with several cars on Sydney Road around 12:30 pm, according to police statements.
An eyewitness, who spoke to 3AW, recounted a harrowing scene. The Camry, allegedly veering onto the wrong side of the road, was seen heading towards Bell Street and sideswiping “five or six cars” in its path.
“The entire car was a wreck,” recalled 3AW caller Craig. “It was dented all over, and the windscreen was shattered.”
The driver, described as a young man sporting a beard and wearing a grey t-shirt, was alone in the vehicle. “He drove like a complete maniac,” Craig continued. “He was hitting cars, sideswiping a tram, and barely missed me as he barreled through the intersection.”
The reckless driving brought Sydney Road to a standstill, particularly in the vicinity of Bell Street, leaving a trail of alarm and frustration among commuters.
“Half of Sydney Road’s come to a grinding halt up towards the Bell Street area.”
The car came to a stop next to Coburg Market, where police said the driver, a 27-year-old Broadmeadows man, attempted to flee the scene on foot.
He was restrained by passersby until police arrived.
The man was given medical treatment at the scene before he was seen being loaded into a divvy van.
The investigation remains ongoing.
