In the early hours of the morning, emergency services were dispatched to the Swanston Centre at University Hospital Geelong. The call came in at approximately 2 a.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities.
Upon arrival, police officers discovered the body of a man inside one of the facility’s rooms. The individual has not yet been formally identified, pending further investigation.
Another man, who is also a patient at the hospital, is currently under police supervision as inquiries continue.
The incident has drawn the attention of the homicide squad, which has launched a thorough investigation, according to police statements.
Barwon Health’s chief medical officer, Affiliate Professor Ajai Verma, confirmed the unfortunate event, stating, “There was an unexpected death of an inpatient in the acute mental health ward, known as the Swanston Centre, overnight.”
“There was an unexpected death of an inpatient in the acute mental health ward (Swanston Centre) overnight,” Barwon Health chief medical officer Affiliate Professor Ajai Verma confirmed.
“The matter was referred to police, who are investigating.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased patient.
“Support has been extended to staff.”
The two men were known to each other, police say.
The coroner has been notified.
