Police warn of dangers of cheap oysters after spate of thefts

A series of oyster thefts has prompted police to issue a caution about the risks of purchasing inexpensive seafood as the holiday season approaches.

In response to these thefts, the Rural Crime Prevention Team conducted inspections on 13 oyster leases along the NSW South Coast. Their operations covered areas such as the Clyde River in Batemans Bay, the Bermagui River near Wapengo, and the Wagonga Inlet in Narooma over a four-day period, ending yesterday.

The investigation also included water patrols, assessments of boat safety equipment, and checks on recreational fishing licenses. These efforts will continue throughout the summer months.

Detective Sergeant Michael Calleja cautioned that while bargain prices might be alluring, oysters bought from questionable sources could pose health risks.

“It’s simply not worth the risk,” Calleja emphasized.

“Purchasing from illegal sources is not only unlawful, but it could also harm your health.”

“Illegal sellers are not bound by strict health requirements, making the oysters potentially unsafe to consume.”

Oyster theft can carry penalties of up to $275,000 or even imprisonment.

Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers, Fishers Watch or report online via the DPI website.
