The accused, Julius Howard, aged 49, faces serious charges of first-degree assault. This was confirmed by the Louisville Metro Police Department, which posted details about the arrest on their Facebook page. Howard is currently detained at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, just before 2 a.m., when officers responded to a report of a brawl in the 400 block of East Market Street in downtown Louisville. The location was near a McDonald’s restaurant, adding a public aspect to this violent encounter.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a severely injured man on South Jackson Street, a short distance from the reported location. The victim had suffered significant injuries due to the assault. Police officers administered initial care until emergency medical services reached the scene to transport him to a nearby hospital. The victim’s condition was described as critical and life-threatening.

Given the gravity of the injuries, the case was escalated to the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Homicide Unit, which took over the investigation. As part of their inquiry, detectives engaged with witnesses, who provided insights that may reveal the motive behind this vicious attack.

“Due to the severity of the injuries, LMPD’s Homicide Unit was notified and has assumed control of this investigation,” the police department said. Part of the investigation included speaking with witnesses, who appeared to give detectives an idea of a possible motive.

The suspect had told the victim to “leave his country” before kicking him and striking him repeatedly with a wooden two-by-four witnesses said, per local CBS affiliate WLKY. Officers “canvassed the area, located a suspect, and detained him,” police stated.

The suspect — identified as Howard — reportedly had blood on his shoes when he was arrested. He allegedly admitted to “fighting” the victim.

Howard was booked into the local jail and was scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on Wednesday.
