Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has defended the actions of the first responding police during the Bondi shooting, but admits the weapons police use could be changed.
It has been confirmed there were two police officers assigned to protect the Chanukah by the Sea event, which was targeted by two gunmen who killed 15 people.

In a conversation with James Willis on 2GB, Lanyon revealed that the two police officers involved had been on the force for less than two years. He noted that their initial response was hindered by the disparity in firepower between them and the assailants.

“The situation was chaotic, with two assailants of malicious intent positioned at a height and equipped with high-powered, long-range firearms,” Lanyon explained.

“It was simply impractical for the police to gather and advance under such circumstances.”

Despite these challenges, Lanyon commended the officers for their remarkable courage.

“At the time the first shots rang out, both officers were in the park. They moved towards the origin of the gunfire, which is where they sustained their injuries,” Lanyon recounted.

“Their bravery was truly commendable.”

“They were incredibly brave.”

He said one of the officers was now awake in hospital, and that both were in a critical but stable condition.

“I’ve been to the hospital to visit both officers and their families,” he said.

“Their families are overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from the police family, but obviously the support from members of the public has been significant, and they’re greatly appreciating that.”

Lanyon hinted police could be allowed to carry long arms in response to the shooting.

“Traditionally, police have only carried handguns as our engagement has traditionally been at close quarters,” Lanyon said.

“Obviously, the type of violence that we are seeing at the moment, the type of crimes that have been committed around the world change some of that.

“We’ve recently rolled out long arms to some of our tactical officers to ensure that they are better equipped. We’ll certainly continue to review that with the Police Association.”
