Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a surprising turn of events, 42-year-old Freddie Lee Edwards Jr. found himself in police custody yesterday, facing charges of extortion and grand theft. The arrest follows allegations that he stole a dog and demanded $150 from its owner, threatening to report her for neglect if she refused to pay.

According to a report from the Gainesville Police Department, the incident began on July 21 when the dog’s owner was refueling her vehicle. She momentarily stepped away, only to return and discover her Maltese-Poodle mix, valued at $825, had vanished. About an hour later, Edwards allegedly contacted the owner using the phone number on the dog’s collar. Instead of returning the pet, he is accused of accusing her of neglect and issuing a demand for $150 to avoid involving law enforcement.

Fearing for her pet’s well-being, the owner agreed to Edwards’ terms. Witnesses reported that she handed over the money during a meeting with Edwards, who then relinquished the dog back to her care after receiving the payment.

Authorities were provided with photographic evidence of Edwards during the exchange, and witnesses corroborated the victim’s account of the events.

Edwards now faces charges of extortion and grand theft. His criminal history includes 13 felony convictions, with one being violent, and 12 misdemeanor convictions, three of which are violent. He has previously served a state prison sentence, released in 2010, and is currently on probation for felony battery. Additionally, he has a pending court appearance for driving without a valid license, his second offense. Judge Jonathan Ramsey has set his bail at $35,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
