Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – D’Andre Vanshon Jemel Anderson, 29, was taken into custody on Wednesday and accused of aggravated assault for reportedly using a mop handle to threaten a convenience store employee.

Around 7:55 p.m. on July 2, an officer from the Gainesville Police Department was called to the Circle K at 1515 N. Main Street. The clerk reported that Anderson had scattered merchandise on the floor, leapt behind the sales counter, and brandished a mop handle above his head in a menacing fashion. She stated that he advanced toward her aggressively with the mop, making her fear for her safety.

Three witnesses reportedly corroborated the clerk’s account of the incident.

Anderson, whose address is recorded as GRACE Marketplace, faces charges of aggravated assault. His criminal record includes two felony convictions (non-violent) and three misdemeanor convictions (two involving violence); he has served a sentence in state prison and was released in 2019.

He was arrested in May for damaging a door at a friend’s house; bail was initially set at $2,500, but after his attorney argued that he could not afford the bail and would reside at a home in Lincoln Estates, he was released on his own recognizance in early June. Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
