Authorities successfully located a missing Wisconsin woman in Illinois on Sunday, following her alleged escape from a group home after she reportedly removed her ankle monitor the previous day.

WMTV reports that Waukesha County District Attorney Lesli Boese expressed her intent to support a motion to revoke Morgan Geyser’s conditional release.

Boese mentioned that the decision on whether to pursue a motion against the 23-year-old Geyser for tampering with her Department of Corrections monitoring device and absconding from her Madison group home falls to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.

This autumn, Geyser had been transferred to a group home for treatment related to a psychotic spectrum disorder, though the court has kept the specific location confidential. Boese indicated that any motion filed could result in Geyser’s return to a more secure facility, such as an institution or hospital, instead of a group home.

Reports suggest the Wisconsin Department of Corrections reached out to the group home two hours post-detection of the ankle monitor malfunction on Saturday. It was only then that they discovered Geyser was missing.

Nevertheless, Madison police revealed they were not informed of Geyser’s disappearance until Sunday morning when someone from the group home notified them.

Geyser, 23, vanished with an adult acquaintance in Madison, Wisconsin. According to CBS, Geyser and a 42-year-old man were later found sleeping on the sidewalk after Posen, Illinois, police were called about two people loitering behind a building. Geyser allegedly gave officers a false name before saying she did not want to disclose her identity because she had “done something really bad.” At some point, Geyser reportedly suggested officers could “just Google” her.

According to reports, the man Geyser was found with whas been charged with criminal trespassing and obstructing identification, as he also lied about his identity. He has since been released from custody.

Madison police Chief John Patterson explained on Monday that they do not get a Department of Corrections apprehension request immediately due to how common they are.

Patterson said that officers handling these cases review a timeline and communication between the agencies, according to WMTV.

Geyser was 12 in 2014 when she and Anissa Weier nearly stabbed a female classmate to death. After a sleepover celebrating Geyser’s 12th birthday, she and Weier lured the classmate to the woods  — where they stabbed her 19 times and left her for dead.

The girls claimed they carried out the attack to appease “Slender Man,” an internet meme. They also said they believed their families would be harmed if they did not attack their classmate, who survived.

Geyser and Weier were found not guilty due to mental disease or defect. Weier was released from a mental institution in 2021. Geyser remained institutionalized despite seeking her release on four occasions.

However, in March, a judge granted Geyer’s petition for conditional release. In July, a Sun Prairie group home rescinded its offer to take in Geyser as a resident. Geyser’s attorney said it was due to negative publicity.

Regarding the possible motion, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne told the news outlet that they have not received a referral. However, Ozanne said Madison police are investigating.

Geyser, who remains in custody, will be transferred to Cook County jail for an extradition hearing.
