Crime Roundup with Nancy Grace: Is Diddy Controlling the Courtroom?

A New York federal judge finalized a sentencing date on Tuesday for Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was convicted of two counts of prostitution last week.

According to The New York Times, both the prosecution and defense have set October 3 as the sentencing date for Combs. Earlier this week, a jury found Combs guilty of two counts of facilitating prostitution through transportation. The prosecution noted that sentencing guidelines suggest a prison term between 51 and 63 months, although they may push for a longer sentence.

On the other hand, Combs’ legal team is aiming for a shorter sentence of 21 to 27 months. They have also requested his release from custody on a $1 million bond.

While Combs was not convicted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, he was found guilty under the Mann Act for transporting male escorts for the purpose of engaging in sexual activities with his two former partners, one of whom is Cassie Ventura. Lead prosecutor Maurene Comey highlighted that Combs continued hiring escorts even while under investigation.

Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs’ bond, citing the defense’s own words about Combs’ violent behavior towards his former girlfriends. He noted that Combs’ violence and illegal activity continued even after federal agents searched his home.

Subramanian concluded that Combs’ actions showed his “disregard for the rule of law and a propensity of violence.” Ventura’s lawyer also submitted a letter to the court, urging against Combs’ release.

“Ms. Ventura believes that Mr. Combs is likely to pose a danger to the victims who testified in this case, including herself, as well as to the community,” her lawyer wrote.

People reported that Combs’ lawyers and prosecutors had a phone conference on Tuesday without Combs or Subramanian. The defense’s sentencing memorandum is due on September 19, and the prosecution’s is due a week later.
