Leland Shooting
According to NBC, in Leland, a town situated in northwest Mississippi, individuals had assembled in the downtown area following the school’s homecoming game to celebrate when gunfire erupted.
Washington County Coroner La’Quesha Watkins reported that four individuals were fatally shot at the scene, and two more died at the hospital from their injuries, with several others wounded.
The coroner’s office confirmed the identities of those killed at the location as Oreshama Johnson, 41, Calvin Plant, 19, Shelbyona Powell, 25, and Kaslyn Johnson, 18.
The victims who died at the hospital were identified as Amos Brantley Jr., 18, and Amos Brantley, 34, according to Clarion Ledger.
The shooting and chaos took place late Friday night, around midnight, continuing into early Saturday morning, according to CNN.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves commented, “In Leland, several casualties were reported following a shooting on a major street. Law enforcement is actively seeking to identify the perpetrators.”
No arrests have been made, and Senator Derrick Simmons had not been informed of any possible suspects as of Saturday, according to NBC News.
Mayor John Lee expressed to USA Today, “We’ve never experienced an incident like this; Leland is known for its low crime rate. Everyone is familiar with one another here, as we are a tight-knit community.”
Heidelberg Shooting
Three people were shot Friday night, on the southeast side of Mississippi, at Heidelberg High School. Two died and another was wounded.
Governor Reeves stated on social media, “Initial investigations indicate that at Heidelberg High School, two people were killed, including an expectant mother.”
Authorities with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department identified Tylar Jarod, 18, as the suspect in the Heidelberg shooting, Clarion Ledger reported.
Rolling Fork Shooting
On Friday night, just south of Leland in Rolling Fork, another shooting “occurred outside of the football game,” the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department stated.
The sheriff’s office has identified two suspects in connection with the shooting: Justin Pam and Michael Miles Jr.
The victim, Quindale Wise, had two gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition, according to the Clarion Ledger.
