Seven individuals, comprising four men and three women, are facing charges after allegedly attacking police officers in southern New South Wales yesterday.

The altercation occurred after officers responded to reports of suspected drug activity on Gipps Street in Bega.

Upon arrival, police attempted to engage with a 26-year-old man who was conversing with others in a stationary vehicle.

The man reportedly became defiant and resisted arrest, and was subsequently found to be in possession of 4 grams of methamphetamine.

Allegedly, he attempted to arm himself with a hammer and escape, but his efforts were thwarted.

Subsequently, two men and two women from the car are accused of surrounding a male constable and physically assaulting him.

Two men and two women who were in the vehicle then allegedly surrounded a male constable and assaulted him.

The two men were 34 and 40, whilst the women were 33 and 44.

A 64-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly arrived on the scene and obstructed officers, whilst the 40-year-old man who was already arrested allegedly punched an officer in the face.

The officer fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, and he received a laceration to his eye.

A senior constable also sustained minor injuries while trying to arrest a 30-year-old man who arrived on the scene to disrupt the arrests.

A search of the car allegedly found drugs, an extendable baton, a prohibited weapon, drug material and scales.

All seven were taken to Bega Police Station and issued with various charges.

The 40-year-old man was charged with multiple offences, including two counts of assaulting a police officer and two counts of possessing prohibited drugs.

A 26-year-old man was charged with multiple offences, including supplying a prohibited drug and damaging property; the pair were refused bail and will appear in court today.

Of the remaining five people who were arrested, the 34-year-old man was bailed and will face Bega Local Court on December 23, whilst the other four received court attendance notices for assaulting police and hindering or resisting police.

Two will appear in Bega Local Court on November 25, and the other two will appear at the same court on December 9 and December 23 respectively.
