At a youth softball game in Georgia, a routine post-game handshake turned violent when a coach suddenly pulled another coach’s hair and struck her face, according to local authorities.

Meredith Haskew Grant was apprehended by the Dalton Police Department on Saturday, facing charges of misdemeanor battery. The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office informed Law&Crime that Grant was detained at the Whitfield County Jail but was released on bond later that day.

Families had gathered at Heritage Point Regional Park in Dalton, Georgia, for the game, as reported by area Fox affiliate WTVC. The match was between GA Fury Platinum Harris and the Wreckers Fastpitch, with players aged 8 and under.

Following the conclusion of the game, both teams and their coaches participated in the traditional handshake at the pitcher’s mound, which is a gesture of sportsmanship. The peaceful exchange was abruptly disrupted by an altercation.

Video of the incident shared by Chattanooga, Tennessee-based NBC affiliate WRCB shows a woman alleged to be Grant grabbing another person by their hair, yanking them toward her and onto the ground, and then appearing to throw multiple punches. Several other adults rush over and manage to break the two people up.

Dalton police arrived at the scene, where Grant claimed the opposing team had been making derogatory remarks about her daughter, as noted in the arrest report. She further alleged that another coach confronted her aggressively.

However, investigators seemed unconvinced by her account. They reportedly stated that video evidence indicated that Grant was the instigator of the altercation.

The other coach — the woman allegedly attacked — told WRCB that “I’m just going to let the video speak to her character. At the end of the day, my coaching staff and myself know the truth. The video doesn’t lie.”

The defendant has reportedly been banned from all future such tournaments.

Dalton, Georgia, is located in the northwest of the state, about 30 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
