5 Children Kept Tied in Cages Until 1 Escapes, Found By Neighbor

In the early hours of Monday, authorities in Utah apprehended a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The incident has alarmed the community and underscored the potential dangers of social media interactions.

As reported by KSL, a Taylorsville police officer stopped Derek James Jones, 31, around 2:30 a.m. The officer noted that Jones appeared to be attempting evasive maneuvers to avoid detection, according to details in an arrest affidavit.

Upon stopping Jones, officers discovered the 13-year-old girl hidden beneath several blankets in the backseat of his vehicle, bringing a shocking twist to the routine traffic stop.

“I engaged with the young female victim, who was found inside a white SUV under blankets,” the officer detailed in the affidavit. “She expressed fear and confusion, stating she had been kidnapped. The girl appeared extremely frantic and emotional. We also found that she was taken from her home without the consent of her legal guardian.”

The young victim recounted that Jones had inappropriately touched her and threatened her life if she revealed what had happened.

Investigators suspect that Jones may have met the girl through social media, highlighting the ongoing concern for online safety among minors.
