According to records reviewed by Law & Crime, 33-year-old Martel Huggins has been formally charged with murder and assault. He was taken into custody at the Lucas County Corrections Center on Tuesday.
The victim, 27-year-old Malicai Calder, was reported missing over the weekend in Toledo. Toledo Police Department officers launched a search operation, which led to a significant breakthrough on Tuesday when they spotted Calder’s work vehicle navigating through the city.
Police managed to intercept the vehicle on Mulberry Drive. Inside, they discovered it was not Calder behind the wheel but rather Martel Huggins, who was later identified as the suspect. In a shocking revelation, authorities found evidence that suggested Calder’s body had been dismembered, as reported by local ABC affiliate WTVG.
Disturbingly, body parts belonging to Calder were reportedly discovered inside the vehicle.
Specifically, body parts of Calder were apparently inside the vehicle.
The victim reportedly had stab and gunshot wounds to his head. The county coroner’s office ruled his death a homicide and stated his body had been dismembered.
Officers had gone to Calder’s home, where they apparently found a dog barking, the shower running, and the TV on. His vehicle was also reported missing.
It is unclear whether Calder and Huggins had a relationship before the victim’s death. Any possible motive has not been announced by authorities.
Huggins is being held in jail on a $1 million bond and is expected in court next month.
