NICU Nurse Has License Suspended After 7 Preemies Suffer Suspicious Bone Fractures at Hospital

Erin Strotman, a former NICU nurse aged 27, recently accepted a plea bargain after being initially charged with 20 counts. She pleaded no contest to nine counts of child abuse.

The case unfolded when Detective Megan Lynch from Henrico County Police was called to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. A 5-month-old boy in the NICU was found with a broken left femur, sparking concern.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the child also had a broken right tibia and several fractured ribs. These injuries bore a resemblance to those suffered by four other male infants in the NICU the previous summer.

In response to these mysterious injuries, the hospital had installed surveillance cameras throughout the NICU. Detective Lynch meticulously examined the footage to gather evidence.

On November 10, surveillance captured Nurse Erin Strotman in the room with the infant, referred to as “Y.H.” in hospital records. The video revealed Strotman handling Y.H. by the legs, exerting pressure, and pushing them backward until the feet nearly touched the head. The baby was visibly in distress and crying.

Currently, seven potential abuse incidents are under scrutiny, with authorities anticipating the possibility of uncovering more. Henrico County investigators are diligently reviewing extensive hours of surveillance footage to piece together the full scope of events.

Reports indicate that at least three affected families attended Strotman’s court appearance. One father, speaking publicly, stated that another couple reported their child had suffered 12 fractures.

Strotman has been formally charged in one baby’s case, with the investigation ongoing. Her public defender stated that she has not yet entered a plea.

Strotman remains in custody without bail, and her next court appearance is set for March 24.
