A teenager from Louisiana is facing murder charges following the discovery of her newborn daughter’s body inside a tote bag at her residence.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office was alerted by staff at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center. They reported that a 14-year-old girl had arrived seeking medical attention after delivering her baby at home.
Upon visiting the scene, deputies discovered the deceased infant in the tote, with severe neck injuries.
Initially, the teenager was charged with failing to seek help and obstructing justice. However, after an autopsy revealed the death was a homicide, the charges were elevated to first-degree murder.
Sheriff Jason Ard of Livingston Parish stated that it’s believed the teenager hid her pregnancy from her family and that the newborn was alive at birth before being killed.
“This case has been particularly challenging for all the First Responders involved,” Ard noted. “Please keep them and the family in your thoughts during this sensitive investigation. Due to its nature, no further details are available at this time.”
The girl has been booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center, according to WAFB.
