In what could have been a tragic encounter, an Ohio man allegedly involved in a shoplifting incident at a Walmart narrowly avoided a more serious outcome last week. During the confrontation, the suspect, Shane Newman, reportedly drew a firearm and aimed it at a police officer’s head. Fortunately, the weapon malfunctioned, and the potentially deadly situation was averted by the quick thinking of a Walmart employee.
The entire event was recorded on the officer’s body camera, providing a gripping visual account of the incident. The footage reveals 21-year-old Newman, alongside 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey, seated in Walmart’s loss prevention office. In a sudden turn of events, Newman produced a hidden firearm and attempted to discharge it at the officer. As the officer instinctively retreated, a Walmart asset protection associate heroically intervened, disarming Newman and wrestling him to the ground. This gave the officer the opportunity to regain control, drawing his weapon and securing the suspect.
The officer later explained in the footage that he refrained from firing his weapon out of concern for the safety of the Walmart employee who had bravely engaged with Newman. This decision underscores the high-pressure, split-second judgments law enforcement officers often must make.
Jessie Carpenter, Walmart’s Asset Protection Operations Coach, expressed pride in the employee’s decisive actions. “The safety and security of our customers and associates is always a top priority,” Carpenter stated, as reported by WOIO. “We’re proud of the brave action our asset protection associate took to maintain the safety of everyone in our store. We’ll continue to work with police as they investigate.”
The incident also raised questions about procedural lapses, as the video showed the officer had conducted a pat-down of Newman earlier without detecting the weapon. This oversight has prompted further scrutiny as authorities continue their investigation into the matter.
Interestingly, the officer patted Newman down minutes before he pulled the gun, somehow missing the weapon, as seen on the video.
Newman has been charged with attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession, and felon having a weapon. Jeffrey was charged with complicity to commit robbery.
Newman and Jeffrey appeared in Canton Municipal Court on Friday, when a judge gave Newman a $1 million bond and Jeffrey a bond of $500,000. They are due in court again on Tuesday.
